PRIMEX celebrates conferment of National Scientist title to Dr. Edgardo Gomez

Dr. Gomez received the Presidential Medallion in recognition for his outstanding contributions to science particularly his researches on marine ecosystems which became the bases for management of and the conservation programs for the country's marine resources. Most notable among his researches have been on coral reef ecology and conservation, reestablishment of giant clam stocks, and marine science capacity enhancement. His pioneering research works on invertebrate zoology, coral reef science and assessment, and invertebrate aquaculture, where he steered the world?s first national-scale assessment of damage to coral reefs, which brought widespread concern over the status coral reefs. This led to worldwide conservation initiatives, such as the Global reefs and Risk Analysis, Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, and the International Coral Reef Action, among others. The Order of National Scientist is the highest honor given by the President of the Republic of the Philippines to a Filipino man or woman of science in the Philippines who has made significant contributions in one of the different fields of science and technology. Gomez, who was named National Scientist by President Benigno S. Aquino III on 12 August 2014 at Malacañang Palace. Dr. Gomez was one of four National Scientist awardees who were recognized for their outstanding work and contributions to science and technology in the country. The NAST news release said that “academician Gomez was recognised for his sterling contributions in invertebrate biology and ecology, giant clam culture and restoration, and coral reef assessment and conservation.” Ms. Elvira C. Ablaza, PRIMEX President and CEO, hosted a dinner in honour of Dr. Gomez and his wife, Ambassador Phoebe A. Gomez, at the Summer Palace restaurant at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel on 11 September 2014. PRIMEX Directors Jerome F. Sison, Guillermo L. Morales, and Luis Gerardo A. Baluyut attended the event together with Mr. Leo R. Pura, Ms. Lourdes A. Caballero, and consultants Dr. Annadel S. Cabanban and Dr. Porfirio Aliño. Aside from Dr. Gomez’ achievement, PRIMEX also recognized Dr. Aliño on his investiture as Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology  (NAST)  on 10 July 2014. Dr. Aliño is Deputy Director for Research of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) while Dr. Gomez is Professor Emeritus. Both Dr. Gomez and Dr. Aliño were as consultants of the ADB Regional Cooperation on Knowledge Management, Policy and Institutional Support to the Coral Triangle Initiative implemented by PRIMEX from 2011–2014. In that project, Dr. Gomez provided technical leadership and guidance to the six Coral Triangle countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste) in their preparation of their respective State of the Coral Triangle Reports, while Dr. Aliño played a key role in putting together the Regional State of the Coral Triangle Report with inputs from other members of the PRIMEX Consultant Team. —— Read more about the NAST awardees]]>
